Root Beer Bundle - 6 Famous Root Beers

Everyone talks about baseball and apple pie, but what could be more American than Root Beer?  The original colonists brewed root beer from a blend of sassafras root, sugar and other exotic  herbs and spices to create a drink that could substitute regular beer or ale.  The list of ingredients for classic root beer can include vanilla, ginger, licorice, juniper berries, hops, birch bark, sassafras and chirreta root.  Shockingly, the primary flavoring agent in most modern root beers is wintergreen!  All across the country restaurants and breweries have developed their own secret recipes for this delicious refreshing beverage, and we’ve collected the best of the bunch!  We’ve got Filbert's root beer - originating in 1926 from Chicago.  Milwaukee may be the most famous beer city in the country, but they know a little something about root beer as well, and no one does it better than Sprecher’s.  Anyone from St. Louis will tell you that Fitz’s is the premier root beer in that city, and Detroit will come right back with Faygo.  All over the Midwest the Dog n Suds chain is as famous for this frothy beverage as they are for their hot dogs, and in New York it is all Boylan’s all the time.  We couldn’t find a favorite, and so we decided you shouldn’t have to choose either!  This sampler is a little piece of root beer heaven, delivered right to your door.

Have a powerful thirst for root beer?  Why should you have to choose between the best ones in the country?  We’ve compiled the top six from all over this root beer loving land, and we’ll send you one of each.  You get six 12 oz. bottles of root beer, one each from Berghoff, Sprecher, Fitz’s, Faygo, Boylan and Dog n Suds.  Do a taste test to find your favorite…if you can!

** Berghoff’s has discontinued the manufacture of their Root Beer in bottles for commercial/retail sales, and so our Root Beer Bundle now includes FILBERT’S ROOT BEER, another fantastic Old World Style Root Beer out of Chicago, with a great history going back to 1926. We know you will enjoy Filbert’s, and the rest of these great root beers!

Serving Suggestions

Okay, root beer is best served ice cold, in a frosty mug, straight up.  And of course there is the traditional root beer float – just add a scoop of great vanilla ice cream to the above!  But that didn’t stop us from seeing if we couldn’t find a more unique use for America’s favorite beverage.  Try this fun recipe!

Root Beer Cake (adapted from Saveur Magazine issue 104)

1 cup butter, plus 1 tsp. to grease pan
2 1⁄2 cups cake flour, plus 1 tbsp. for dusting cake pan
2 1⁄2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup root beer
5 tsp. root beer extract
1 1⁄2 cups sugar
2 cups butter
4 room-temperature eggs
4 1⁄2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tbsp. cream
1. Heat oven to 350°. Grease a 9" × 13" pan with 1 tsp. of the butter; dust with 1 tbsp. of the cake flour; tap bottom of pan to remove excess flour.

2. Sift remaining cake flour, baking powder, and salt into a bowl; set aside.

3. Whisk together root beer and 2 tsp. of the root beer extract in a bowl; set aside.

4. Beat sugar and 1 cup of the butter in a large bowl until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating briefly after each addition. Alternately add flour mixture and root beer mixture, waiting for each to be incorporated before adding the next. Mix briefly, then transfer batter to pan; smooth out top.

5. Bake, rotating once, until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Let cool.

6. Put confectioners' sugar and remaining butter into a bowl; beat with an electric mixer to combine. Add cream and remaining root beer extract; beat to make a fluffy frosting. Spread frosting on cake, making swirls and whorls.
