Mehlenbacher's Taffy
Everyone around here has a taffy memory of some kind - parent’s bringing it back from beach vacations, buying it with allowance money, watching the candy maker’s on the boardwalk pull it in the windows. These days most taffy is made by machine, the cooked sugar and flavor twisted around huge metal pullers in factories. Its perfectly serviceable taffy, but it just didn’t fill our particular cravings. Then we found Melenbacher’s. Since the 1900’s they have been hand-pulling taffy from the original family recipe. They make small batches, cooking the sugar carefully, waiting until it is cool enough to touch, and then stretching it by hand over a metal hook on the wall as natural oils and flavorings are added. Once the taffy is fully stretched, it’s rolled into strips, cut, wrapped and labeled, all by hand. The first time we tasted it, we knew that we were in a whole new taffy arena, one that we couldn’t wait to share with you. All natural, no preservatives or additives, this superlative taffy can last up to six to eight months, but we’re pretty sure you’ll be lucky to get six to eight days out of it!
